EU may join boycott
The snowball is rolling down the hill.
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging EU leaders to boycott the Beijing Olympics’ opening ceremony.
MEPs want China to begin a dialogue with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama by August.
The resolution firmly condemns “the brutal repression” by China in last month’s crackdown on Tibetan protests. [MEPs call for EU Olympics boycott. BBC NEWS. April 10 2008]

Ah fuck this. How about KL for a race-free society instead? Or KL for zero-poverty? Or KL for no-corruption? Or Better Schools? No more Snatch Thefts.
How the hell can we interfere with others’ politics when we haven’t devoted enough energy to solving our own issues?
Compared to only one positive election outcome in ur forty years history, China is actually doing much better in terms of treating her minority ethic groups. I tell u what, all the minority races in China enjoy more privileges, e.g no tax, higher chances for higher education, exempt from the One Child policy and etc.
Speaking of Singapore being parted from Malaya, don’t forget the riots during the period. Maybe Malaysia is not a good example as it is a new country. Just look at the reaction of the USA government towards the southern rebellion. You will understand the importance of sovereignty and integrity to other people.
Tibetans slaves were freed since 1959 as the blacks were. Before 1959, Tibet was under the Lamaist (Buddhist) theocracy. Just like most theocracies in history, it was a very cruel and inhumane form of governing. Most Tibentans were under the slavery by the monks, agreed by most western historians.
I don’t know where u heard Tibet became effectively independent for a number of decades before China forcefully annexed it. Check out the maps by western countries before 1949, e.g. map of Republic of China printed by Rand McNally & Co. in the year 1914

In fact, lamas received Dalai titles and appointments from Chinese empirors in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The current Dalai Lama, received his Dalai title from government of ROC as well.
I agree freedom of religion is human rights but not applicable for a cult in which the leader asks his followers to burn themselves.
Yeah, Malaysia has its own problems and it needs to be addressed. But Malaysian problems do not make the occupation of Tibet any more justifiable. And China’s issue does not make Malaysian problem any less serious. The point is, PRC can’t use others’ problem to run away from its problem.
If Tibet was part of China throughout history, why did PRC need to invade Tibet in 1950s?
And freedom of religion applicable to all. Even Falun Dafa. If one starts to apply double standard, that means one does not believe in freedom.
By ur definition, the US federal government also invaded the south in 1860s. What did ur government do when the mobs turned their ugly faces? U r in no position accusing others. Mind ur own business first.
Have u been to Tibet or China? Have u talked to ordinary Tibetans living there? There are 56 ethnic groups in China living in harmony for decades. The crack down of Tibetan riots and Falun cult are supported by the majority of Chinese. We respect freedom but we more respect the rule of law.
If what my government done something wrong in whatever cases, it is wrong. I will not defend it just because it is my government.
If what my government done something wrong in whatever cases, it does not make what the PRC’s wrong any more right.
A wrong is a wrong, be it done in Malaysia, or in China, or in the US, anywhere.
hafiz, i think you should return to recom and read the tibet-china thread there. i tried to post this msg to you in your blog but the code just wont show up. this pro-independence thing is making me sick. maybe we should also remind ourselves the reason the american civil war was had.
things that make one sicks differ from person to person.
I am going to KL to protest against those mobs involved in the recent Tibet riots. Do join us!
Hi! In your earlier post (http://kl4freetibet.wordpress.com/2008/04/09/china-boycotted-the-olympics-too/) I had said that I would come attend the protest. However I have since changed my mind substantially.
Before I state the reasons why let me tell a bit about my experiences with Tibet..
I first visited Tibet in 1999, and found it to be a beautiful country with a unique and precious culture and religion.
Since then I have lamented when I heard the news in later years of:
– the Chinese policy of forcing Tibetans to speak in Mandarin
– Another policy of incentives to Hans for immigrating to Tibet, diluting its native population
– the China Tibet Railway
– the destruction of Buddhist monasteries and temples in 1959.
Naturally when the protests started during the Beijing Olympics torch run, I took the side of the pro-Tibetans almost spontaneously.
However I have a growing suspicion now that the Tibet riots were an orchestrated incident designed to manipulate the world into taking sides.
Just a look at the comments in related youtube videos will show the success of this manipulation: angry hateful comments are being thrown about between pro-tibetans and pro-chinese.
This all dawned on me when I read the news of the U.S. House of Representatives resolution intervening on China’s policies. It occured to me that if things escalate into the US imposing trade restrictions or even all out war with China, there will be no opposition from the people simply because their opinions would have already been manipulated to thinking China is evil.
There is evidence throughout history of wars being orchestrated in this matter.. Franz Ferdinand, Hitler self sabotaging the Reichstag, Gulf of Tonkin incident, 9/11, etc.. where the public is manipulated into supporting wars that they would not have normally supported in the first place.
I still love Tibet and I will actively try to improve their conditions. I just won’t do it by sabotaging China’s moment of glory, and unless I get a clearer picture of things that happened, from sources other than very dubious western media sources.
Thanks for having me onboard these past few days and good luck with the protests!
Like globalization, Tibet is also more closely linked with the other parts of China. It is inevitable that Han people go there and do business as Tibetan do in the outer provinces. Otherwise, how to improve Tibet economy sustainably? Forcing to speak Mandarin and deconstruction of temples are untrue. Speaking Mandarin is economy incentive for locals tourisms. After all, encouraging to learn national language in school is nothing wrong. Tibetan is preserved like the languages of other minority ethnic groups.
Dear dan,
I applause ur sensible thinking. Many visitors share the same positive image towards Tibet until the recent riot, during which many victims were beaten and some even kill, some shops and banks are robbed and burned. I believe every civil government will take action to restore peace and order. These riots are confirmed in a recent interview with local Tibetan taxi drivers and doctors.
In fact each year the central government pumped in lots of money repairing and rebuilding gold-plated temples for the monks, who don’t need to work. They and those exiled Tibetan government leaders used to have much vested interest in the old slavery system.
